Motherhood: George & Avani

I vowed when my daughter was born that I would capture her little being as best as I could; this was the very reason I bought a ‘good’ camera, and the cause of my obsession (/career) in photography. As the years have slipped by I have captured her less; life gets in the way, the to-do list ever growing. I love motherhood photography because it allows me to give women the images they deserve and I know they so desperately want, but can’t capture themselves. I am honouring that wish and desire that I first had when my baby was born; to document the bond and the intense love you feel when these little lives enter the world.

When George contacted me and said she wanted to capture her motherhood with her adored baby Avani in a fully creative, intimate way, I knew this would be a special Motherhood photography experience for both of us. For over an hour, George gave me full creative control, and allowed me to incorporate elements of her culture and heritage - such as this saree that will be handed down to her little girl - to give meaning to the images I was to deliver to her. We divided the shoot into two; there were the intimate, cuddly shots on the bed, where they fed and breathed each other in, and then the more creative portraiture that feeds these more cultural elements into the imagery.

It was such a pleasure to have these two in the studio; to invite them into the little castle space I have nurtured and developed, and create images that they will treasure forever. I hope that one day Avani will be able to look at these images and know how loved she was, and how powerful (and serene) her mother was in these early days of her life. That is the hope I have for all of my photography; that it will not only be a beautiful reflection of the people in the images, but also serve as a reminder and a visual heirloom for years - and generations - to come.
